Hello all deep space adventurers this is SpaceCrew speaking!!!

Today, we are going to discover distant worlds. Worlds that seem to be inhospitable but that can actually host life itself.

One of them might surprise you but it's right in orbit around the gas giant Saturn... Its name is Enceladus.

Discovered on the 28th of August 1798 by the largest telescope of the time, its name comes from the passion for Greek mythology of its discoverer's son. Until recently its characteristics were completely unknown.

The first probe to visit this mysterious celestial body was the mythical Vojager 1 which we discussed about in a previous post. Vojager 1 took the first photos of the moon on 12 November 1980.

Thanks to that notorious photo it turned out that the cold and desolate space body around Saturn might actually be a tad more interesting than we thought!

In fact, for the first time in history it was realised that the desolate Enceladus could be geologically active! Another piece of evidence for this was the close passage of the Vojager 2 probe which captured important data on the satellite's atmosphere and surface.

However, the biggest confirmation was given by the puzzling revelations of the famous Cassini mission which during its exploration of Saturn and its moons came across our friend.

The first photos of the geysers of enceladus, taken around 2005, showed the presence of craters only in the southern part of Enceladus mainly near its south pole. And then, in 2008 scientists captured an exceptional discovery!

From the cold and icy surface of the notorious moon, water was actually leaking out in the form of geysers!

This incredible discovery has left the entire international scientific world speechless. If there was water underneath that surface and if there were plumes of water leaking from it then it meant that the planet was active internally but also that it could host life!

And who knows maybe one day our descendants might settle in that very frozen place and discover that there has always been life. 😍😍
